The Women's Land Army and Timber Corps in Grizedale |
Gallery of photographs of the Parish taken in 1941 by Betty Kirkland, resident of Satterthwaite. |
|
Betty Kirkland joined the Women's Land Army in 1940, doing work on behalf of the Forestry Commission. Towards the end of 1941, she came to Satterthwaite as a telegraph pole selector and was asked to stay on as a measurer, quantifying the timber felled by the men in order to pay their wages (based on the timber they felled). Having joined the Timber Corps when it was formed in 1942, Betty was eventually sent south to work in Somerset in 1944, but returned to Satterthwaite in the 1960s and still lives in the village. |
