| All Saints Church, Satterthwaite |

![]() |
| Records show there was a chapel in Satterthwaite as early as the late 16th century. It was a chapel of ease, which is a building other than the main church of a parish, being more accessible to some parishioners. The main church at this time was the Church of St Michael in Hawkshead. | ||
| The early chapel of ease was rebuilt about 1675, with the support of Daniel Rawlinson, a London vintner and former pupil of Hawkshead Grammar School. His family lived at Old Grizedale Hall. | ||
| The first church in Satterthwaite, built in the early 1840s by Montague Ainslie, was a similar building to the present-day church but had a narrower bell tower. The burial ground was opened in 1867 and is situated above the church to the north east. All Saints Church became independent in 1881 and was restored at a cost of £450. | ||

| In 1914, the church was extensively rebuilt, this time at a cost of £1800, and the square tower we see today was added. An ancient chest, believed to be a relic from the early chapel of ease, lies in the porch of the church. | A detailed history of All Saints Church by Janet and Geoffrey | |

| A NEW SERVICE AT SATTERTHWAITE CHURCH |
||
| The church council at Satterthwaite Church has decided that it is time to try something just a little bit different. Instead of the monthly matins service, there will now be a new service, which we are calling A Service for All Ages. It will take place on the third Sunday of every month at 9:45am, and we shall be trying it for a year to see how it goes. The idea is that it will be slightly less formal than what has gone before, although the dignity of our worship will be maintained. It will also be a bit shorter, with services lasting about 40 minutes - so plenty of time to do other things on that day! |
||
| Why not come along and see what we do? There will be plenty of chat afterwards if you are able to stay for a cup of tea or coffee. The first one will be Sunday 20th April at 9:45am. It would be great to see you there. |
